This 4 hour workshop will give you the opportunity to carve your own limestone sculptures under the tutorage of our experienced carver.
Jim learnt his considerable carving skills as a child, with his family involvement in the formation of the Hakatere Marae. His mother becoming Trustee and Kuia for a number of years.
Jim, immersed in marae Tikanga and activities learned the art of carving. As an adult living for a number of years at Golden Bay he began utilising the abundant driftwood, to create carved art works. Then after his return to Ashburton has developed a passion for limestone carving. Jim’s continued involvement at the Hakatere Marae has culminated in Jim now a Trustee and there, working under Master Carver Alex McLeod, completing the ornate Koruru and Poupou on the maraes Wharenui- meeting house.
Jim sees this workshop as a “taster” workshop. He wants to share his skills and passion of design and carving. He will help you to create one or two smaller, tabletop pieces. This gives you knowledge and confidence to perhaps tackle a larger piece in the future.
The limestone will be supplied by Jim and a small tool list will be supplied on enrolment. Most tools will already be in your garage but easily sourced at a hardware store.
